Just do the math: 18 separate checks take 18 more times to process than one check. Moreover, separate checks tie up one POS terminal, thus slowing the service provided to other tables. I don't ask my accountant to serve me food.

If you have a 20 top who all want separate checks, and then they each hand you a 20 dollar bill...it's going to take a long time to go change out those 20's for smaller bills and then figure out the change for every check.
